Steelton girl follows mom's footsteps to acclaim in beauty pageants

Kaitlyn Balliet walked across the stage at her latest beauty pageant with the comfort level of the seasoned model she is and the confidence of a woman, which she isn’t.

The Steelton toddler entered the world of beauty pageants after being enthralled by “Toddlers & Tiaras,” a television series about the world of child beauty pageants. Kaitlyn, 4, considers pageants a good way to dress up and compete.

“We see it as a fun thing,” said Vanessa Balliet of Steelton, Kaitlyn’s mother. “When Kaitlyn stops having fun with this, we will be done with pageants.”

In the past several months, Kaitlyn has competed in three pageants and won awards for having the best smile, best eyes and best fitness attire. She also has been recognized as a princess, as photogenic and as “Miss Congeniality.” She has a website and is on Facebook.

Her mother, who competed in pageants from ages 4 to 16, said it sounds familiar. Vanessa Balliet, who grew up in the Poconos, used to model clothing for a Jamesway store in addition to competing in pageants.
