Carmel wins 5th straight high school boys swimming sectional
NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The host Noblesville High School boys swim team set five school records in Saturday's boys sectional.
The Millers, though, didn't win a single swimming event. It was top-ranked Carmel (514.5 points) setting the pace with state finals-ready times in its dominating win. The runner-up Millers (391) and third-place Westfield (377.5) did their best to stay close to the Greyhounds in an entertaining battle for second place.
Carmel won its fifth straight sectional title, but more important for the Greyhounds: They had 20 state-qualifying swims. Event winners and those swimmers meeting pre-established state qualifying times advanced.
The Greyhounds will contend for their third consecutive state championship Friday and Saturday at the Natatorium at IUPUI.
Carmel won eight of the 11 swim events; Westfield won the other three. The Shamrocks challenged the Greyhounds early, winning two of the first three events.
"(The sectional) certainly provides a lot of great racing opportunities," said Carmel coach Chris Plumb. "You know coming in here that those third, fourth and fifth guys are racing for state cuts. That's what I think is great. You've got to go for those state cuts to make it out."
