That’s 44 characters, leaving six characters to spare, which isn’t nearly enough to tell the rest of their story.It starts years ago. Kyli was growing up in New Jersey. Dustin was growing up in West Virginia. They had never met. But they had something in common: an unusual, debilitating chronic illness.
Kyli remembers going on vacation with her family, getting dehydrated and fainting. She spent the rest of the summer in and out of hospitals before doctors figured out what was wrong. She had postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
The condition basically means that when the person stands up, their blood pressure drops and their heart rate skyrockets. As a result, simple tasks often aren’t so simple. For instance, when Kyli goes grocery shopping, she often uses a handicapped cart. She looks healthy, so she gets funny looks from other shoppers.
“Life with chronic illness gets terrifying at times,” Kyli wrote on her Facebook page recently. “It’s almost always hard, always a challenge and often very, very lonely. There are times when I feel like I’m stuck inside a house that’s crumbling to pieces. Times when I want to throw up my arms and say, 'I quit.’ Times when the rest of the world seems like it’s moving, moving, moving … and I’m stuck in the same place. But on nights like this one, sick and scared, I remember blessings, big and small, that have come out of this illness of mine.”
