Menlo-Atherton girls fall to Terra Nova in PAL tourney semi

Three Menlo-Atherton seniors bid adieu in a 73-65 loss to Terra Nova-Pacifica in the semifinals of the Peninsula Athletic League girls hoop tourney at Sequoia-Redwood City on Friday. The Bears (10-16) did not qualify for the upcoming Central Coast Section playoffs, going 6-8 in the preseason and 3-7 in the PAL Bay Division.

The Tigers (20-5) have three Div. I signees in guard Terilyn Moe (Nevada), guard/forward Ivonne Cook Taylor (Texas Tech) and forward Jayzl Tauala (San Jose State). The trio combined for 55 points with Moe scoring a game-high 26. Considering the circumstances, an eight-point defeat by the overmatched Bears was more than respectable.

"We put 60-something points on the board against Terra Nova," Bears longtime coach Pam Wimberly said. "We hadn't done that all season. Our kids did their job. They knew this was an insurmountable game, but they didn't quit and played hard. They played together and that's all I could ask."

The Bears turned the ball over 10 times in the first period as the Tigers extended pressure out on the perimeter, occasionally double-teaming. Most Menlo-Atherton turnovers were turned into Terra Nova baskets. The Bears, to their credit, had only seven turnovers the final three periods.
