Off the wall: A cozy, colorful Cape
At the home of Bernice and Charlie Smith, the artwork often jump-starts the decorating. Be it an eye-popping painting of red poppies or a tranquil print of a beach, color cues come from what hangs on the walls.
As Bernice, a painter, likes to say: "Instead of choosing art to fit a room, why not start with the art?"
The result is a cozy cape in West Seneca that is comfortable and colorful -- with plenty to look at.
Take the upstairs sand- and blue-colored bath. The scheme was pulled from a 24-by-10-inch artist's print of the beach and waterfront homes in Cape May, N.J., where Charlie's side of the family has vacationed for three generations.
Towels are pale blue; the wall tile is sand with hints of peach -- also from the print.
"You know how a beach is. The colors change; it depends on the time of day," Bernice says.
In the couple's bedroom, it happens again with a large abstract of red poppies painted by Bernice. Inspired by a magazine article about California poppies, Bernice used a reverse glass technique and then put the painting in an old frame rescued from a relative's basement.
